Be educated in plastic. "acrylic" their are many types of plastics on the market and they all have a purpose. Some do not make good sign faces. They also have different characteristics and are meant to be used only in a certain application. Some companies may buy the cheapest plastic or best lower price plastic they can find. Others may sell you what you ask for a give something different, If you receive an up grade then that may be ok, But if you don't then that may be bad business practices. We believe that when you buy anything you should get what you are paying for and that is that no exceptions. Through the hurricanes we have learned a lot about sign structures, poles, pipe, square tubing and I-beam. It seems that round pipe held up the best then square tube second for folding over. If your employees are afraid to handle a plastic sign face then their is a problem, Its ok to be careful during an install, but not have to worry about it. We manhandle the plastic here and we don't worry about it breaking. If a sign face breaks easy in the shop we got bad plastic. And we know it wont make a good sign face out in a storm. We are striving to be known as number one for vacuum formed pan and / or embossed sign faces. The polycarbonate sign faces that people were bringing us through the hurricanes were damaged just as much as acrylic sign faces. We will not pull polycarbonate sign faces. Customers would bring in sign faces with just the embossed copy had come out of the pan embossed sign faces. Then reading to learn more about sign faces on the internet we found that people are painting faces to help protect them from U.V. At least it makes good vandal covers. While we test and are shown how good certain plastics are, We learned that after we pull a plastic sign face we stand on the flange of the face, If it breaks the plastic is not strong enough for us as starters. If we drop a piece of plastic and it shatters, We don't want it in here at all. We'll take a strip and bend it over and stand on it, If it breaks easy, Its out of here. We drive 16 penny nails through the plastic and if it breaks its out also. we do not want any plastic that shatters to be used as plastic sign faces. We are trying to get plastic signs faces for sign companies that will be engineered for 140 mph wind load. So yes we do test the plastic, It could be a defective roll. We want to be known as the one of the best places to buy plastic sign faces. In the next few weeks we'll be switching over to duraplex sg-75 or sg-10. We think this will make everyone happy or close to it. As of right now we are using up the rest of our sg05 and we are happy with this, But we want better. This is my personal thoughts and not intended for anyone to be offended by this nor believe this is to a written fact. you need to make your own judgment in the plastic you use and the supplier you receive it from. We had a job in here that specified polycarbonate and it showed up with v---k labels down the edge of the faces. As we looked it up on the internet we learned it was meant for indoor use only and the other name for this is PETG plastic and stated on the web site that it is intended for indoor use only , I guess we all are victims when we don't know what is what. |
